RCA Board President |
When I assumed the Presidency of the RCA a little over a month ago, we had just received a foot of snow so it was difficult to picture the spring that lay just around the bend. Despite that storm and the incredible Nor’Easter that wreaked havoc in March, warm and sunny weather is on its way – I promise! And, with the arrival of spring, many of the events that make our village so special will begin to fill our calendars. Whether it is cheering on your children as they march down Rowayton Avenue in the Memorial Day Parade in their Little League or Girl Scout uniforms, or watching the fireworks at Bayley Beach on July 4th weekend, or attending one of the incredible summer concerts, Rowayton is a special place to be.
The RCA is committed to continue to bring these events to our residents free of charge. We do this through your generous support, and through our two main fundraisers: Comedy Night and the River Ramble. Last year, we added a third fundraiser, the Rowayton House Tour headed by Barbara Yallop and Sarina Galu. The Tour was a tremendous success and it allowed everyone to experience the coastal charm of Rowayton through the beautiful houses on Bell Island. We had a picture perfect Rowayton day for the tours and I thank the many volunteers who opened their homes for the tours and gave so generously of their time and resources to make this a successful event.
The primary mission of the Rowayton Civic Association is to protect and nurture the community spirit of our residents. We do this by organizing events and fundraisers which allow us to give back to the many cultural and educational institutions that make our seaside village so wonderful. Last year, through our Discretionary Grant and Sponsorship Program, we were able to grant approximately $40,000 to local non-profit organizations such as the Rowayton Historical Society, the Library, the Gardeners Club, the Arts Center and our local schools. These grants were geared toward supporting Rowayton and its residents in a meaningful way.
2009 was also monumental for the RCA as we achieved our goal of becoming a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. This effort – which was spearheaded by Laurie Jones and Karen Casey – means that a portion of your contribution to the RCA is now tax deductible. I encourage all Rowayton residents to become active members of the community by volunteering and by continuing to provide financial support so that our community can continue to flourish.
Lastly, I want to take a sentence or two to thank my predecessor, Laurie Jones for her hard work and tireless commitment as RCA President. Laurie’s energy and ‘can do’ spirit are an inspiration to me and to the entire Board. We will strive to make 2010 a fun and memorable one! Thank you for all your continued support and I look forward to a wonderful (and warm) spring.
